Getting Started
Instructors can request creation of a Project Account on
UCS for instructional or research purposes. The project
space permits users to place files into a special directory
in which the Project supervisors will have read access to files
stored in the project directory. Instructors requesting a Project
Account should have an active UCS account.
Notes about Project Creation
A project is a mechanism for us to provide more disk
space (on a separate "work" disk) for you and your students,
that is distinct from the disk space available to all users
in their home directory. There are two types of projects, instructional
and research. The difference between them is when they
are deleted and the disk space reclaimed. An instructional
project is deleted a week after finals end (modified if incomplete
grades are assigned...contact us in this case). Research
projects are not deleted until the project supervisor is no
longer with the University.
The project supervisor is by default given access to the students'
or assistants' files, but students do not have access to other
students' files, when those files are created in the project
directories. This can be circumvented but at least the provided
defaults are secure ones.
The UCS systems are available to all University departments
and is administered by Computing Support Services.
Completing the Solaris Unix Project Creation Request Form
To request that a project be created for your course or
research topic, complete the web-based form provided at https://www.ucs.louisiana.edu/af_templates/newproj.shtml.
After sending the Project Creation Request form, a confirmation
email will be sent to your University email account.
Solaris Unix Project Change Request Form
Please use the Project Change Request form if the initial
disk quotas prove insufficient. The information required in
this form is used for a number of purposes: (1) add or remove
students and/or teaching assistants to a particular project;
(2) increase disk quota; and (3) enter any comments regarding
a particular project. Once the form has been processed, you
will receive an email message with additional details. If users
were added to the project, their CLIDs will be listed, followed
by a success or failure notation.
