Dealing with Unwanted Email
The question of how to deal with unwanted email is very popular.
Although the University has taken efforts on the server
side to reduce SPAM mail attacks, messages may continue
to infiltrate your email account. These messages are sent
to your University email account and the best way to deal
with this unwanted messages is to simply delete them. However,
certain email applications have mail filtering options
that may be configured to automatically delete messages
with certain keywords. These filters must be controlled
by the individual user and may result in the deletion of
legitimate email messages. Users who plan to enable mail
filtering capabilities should do so with caution. Some
unwanted mail messages may include a hyperlink to a form
that claims to remove you from their mailing list. Never
follow or submit these forms. These submit forms only verify
that your email account is activate.
Users may also want to protect their University email address.
This may be accomplished by reserving the email account
strickly for academic communication purposes. Users may
want to consider creating a "free" or "alternate" email
account with a commerical provider for use when registering
for software, etc. or other uses not related to academic
communication.
