Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003
Filters

SELF-HELP GUIDES > MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 2003 > CONFIGURING OUTLOOK 2003 FILTERS

Use these instructions if you are configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003. These instructions are used to configure computers that connect to the campus network.

To identify whether Outlook is installed on your computer, look for the icon or Outlook or Email on your start menu or program files. If there is no icon on the desktop, click Start, select Programs, and locate Outlook or Email in the menu. If Outlook does not appear in these two places, you must use another program to send and receive your mail.

  1. Start Outlook by double clicking on the desktop icon or on the menu selection.
  2. To configure Outlook correctly we must click on Tools on the top menu and click Rules and Alerts.

  3. This opens the Rules and Alerts screen, where you would select "New Rule".

  4. The next screen called "Rules Wizard" allows you to create your new rule from templates or in blank rule form. We would choose "Start from a blank rule", then make sure the "Check messages when they arrive" is highlighted, and click Next.

  5. This next section is the configuration of your new rule. Under Step 1: field, place a check in the box next to "with specific words in the subject", then select "specific words" in the Step 2: field.

*** NOTE: This can be used to set up any rule you would like to specify. The rules are not restricted to just this specific configuration.

  6. The selection of specific words will bring you to the Search Text box. Here you specify the word you would like to filter in the subject of the message. We type in exactly without the quotation marks, "[BULK]" then click on Add.

  7. Your screen should reflect this image below. Click OK to proceed.

  8. All the information should match on this next screen, if so just click Next.

  9. Under Step 1: field, place a check in the box next to "move it to the specified folder", then select "specified" in the Step 2: field..

  10. Here is where you would select the folder for filter you are configuring. This will redirect your filtered mail based on the rules you have selected.

  11. Click Finish to apply this filter in Outlook, this completes your filter setup.

  12. Click OK to apply this rule to all of your incoming email. This completes the setup of your filter. You can duplicate this for any rule you would like to include in Outlook.
