Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 with SSL

SELF-HELP GUIDES > MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 2003 > CONFIGURING OUTLOOK 2003 with SSL

Use these instructions if you are configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003. These instructions are used to configure computers that connect to the campus network.

To identify whether Outlook is installed on your computer, look for the icon or Outlook or Email on your start menu or program files. If there is no icon on the desktop, click Start, select Programs, and locate Outlook or Email in the menu. If Outlook does not appear in these two places, you must use another program to send and receive your mail.

  1. Start Outlook by double clicking on the desktop icon or on the menu selection.
  2. Since Outlook has previously been setup Outlook does not run the startup wizard. To configure Outlook correctly we must click on Tools on the top menu and click E-mail Accounts.

  3. This opens the Email Accounts screen, where you would select View or change existing e-mail account, then select Next.

  4. Select pop.louisiana.edu and click Change.

  5. This next screen Internet E-mail Settings (POP3), make sure all of your settings on this page are correct then select More Settings ...

  6. This will open Internet E-mail Settings screen select the tab at the top which is labeled Advanced.

  7. Under the section labeled Server Port Numbers put a check in the box next to This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL), below Incoming server (POP3): then click OK.

  8. This shows the previous page, select Next.

  9. Click Finish to save the settings and Close the Outlook configuration screen

  10. NOTE: Email applications such as Netscape Mail, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc. have additional settings that will assist you in automatically downloading new email to your PC. This is referred to as POP interval time. Always avoid setting POP Intervals for less than 30 minutes. Automatically checking email every few minutes places a severe strain on the University's mail server. Please avoid frequent POP intervals.
