Configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003
for the first time

SELF-HELP GUIDES > MICROSOFT OUTLOOK 2003 > CONFIGURING OUTLOOK 2003 WITH WIZARD

Use these instructions if you are configuring Microsoft Outlook 2003 for the first time. These instructions are used to configure computers that connect to the campus network.

To identify whether Outlook is installed on your computer, look for the icon or Outlook or Email on your start menu or program files. If there is no icon on the desktop, click Start, select Programs, and locate Outlook or Email in the menu. If Outlook does not appear in these two places, you must use another program to send and receive your mail.

  1. Start Outlook by double clicking on the desktop icon or on the menu selection.

  2. Since this is the first time you have ever started Outlook the Outlook startup wizard will run.

  3. Click Next.

  4. Select Yes and click Next.

  5. Select POP3 and click Next.

  6. Under the section User Information, type your Full name in Your Name: text entry box.

  7. Under the section User Information, type your alias or email address in the Email Address: text entry box.

  8. Under the section Server Information, type the POP3 name (pop.louisiana.edu) in Incoming mail server (POP3): text entry box.

  9. Under the section Server Information, type the SMTP name (mailer.louisiana.edu) in Outgoing mail server (SMTP): text entry box.

    *** NOTE
: Users who want to send mail from an alternatve Internet provider (not UL Lafayette) must type the Outgoing mail (SMTP) server name of their provider. Contact your Interet provider for this information.

  10. Under the section Logon Information, type your user name in User Name: text entry box.

  11. Under the section Logon Information, type your password in Password: text entry box and select remember password, if you would like to not be prompted every time for you to type in your password then click Next.

  12. Click Finish to save the settings and Close the Outlook startup wizard.

NOTE: Email applications such as Netscape Mail, Microsoft Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird, etc. have additional settings that will assist you in automatically downloading new email to your PC. This is referred to as POP interval time. Always avoid setting POP Intervals for less than 30 minutes. Automatically checking email every few minutes places a severe strain on the University's mail server. Please avoid frequent POP intervals.
