- Assumptions.
- Basic knowledge of personal computers operating with Microsoft
Windows 95/98, availability of CuteFTP (versions 2.0, 2.8,
or 4.0), and intent to upload files to the University's
UCS system are assumed.
- Acquisition.
- CuteFTP is a commercial product from GlobalSCAPE. A 30-day
evaluation (limited features; automatically disabled after
30 days) and a full version (license fee required; educational
pricing available) are offered. Visit the GlobalSCAPE site
(http://www.globalscape.com/)
to view the price list or download the software.
- Installation.
- Exit all unnecessary applications and disable virus protection
prior to installation. Double-click the executable file
downloaded from the GlobalSCAPE site and follow the on-screen
directions. When finished with installation, remember to
reactivate virus protection.
- Configuration.
- After launching CuteFTP, use the connection wizard or
site manager to add a site profile. Site Label should
be an easily understood, short name for the site (e.g.,
UCS). Host Address should be a domain name ranging
from d1.ucs.louisiana.edu through d116.ucs.louisiana.edu.
Where CLID represents a UCS username, Initial Remote
Directory should be /home/CLID or /home/CLID/public_html
(for personal Web pages).
- Two methods exist for adding custom commands. Choose only
one.
- With CuteFTP launched, go to the Menu Bar, click Commands,
click Custom Commands, and click Define
to access the Custom Commands dialogue box. In
the dialogue box, click Add, type Initiate Internet
Access for Label and SITE UMASK 0022
for Command Text. Click Add again, type
Initiate Paranoid Access for Label and SITE
UMASK 0077 for Command Text. Click Add
one more time, type Initiate Projects Access for
Label and SITE UMASK 0027 for Command
Text. Finally, click Close.
- The previous paragraph was the first method for adding
custom commands. The next paragraph is the second method.
Remember, choose only one method.
- Exit CuteFTP. Download UCSS's preconfigured commands.dat
file and save it (right-click on link, then "save
as") in the CuteFTP program folder (e.g., C:\Program
Files\CuteFTP) on the hard drive. The stock commands.dat
file supplied by GlobalSCAPE can be overwritten or renamed
for backup (e.g., original_commands.dat). Relaunch CuteFTP.
(The preconfigured commands.dat from UCSS has been tested
with CuteFTP versions 2.0, 2.8, and 4.0.)
- Either of the previous methods will result in three new
custom commands.
- Initiate Internet Access is for uploading Web
pages and other files that all UCS users may see.
- Initiate Paranoid Access is for uploading files
that no other users can see.
- Initiate Projects Access is for uploading files
that can be seen by users in the same group or project.
- In order to be effective, one of the three custom commands
must be used prior to file uploads. After one of the three
custom commands is used, it remains in effect for the duration
of a connection unless a countradicting command is issued.
- Utilization.
- For detailed usage instructions, access the CuteFTP help
files (with the application launched, go to the Menu
Bar, click Help, and click Contents) or
browse GlobalSCAPE's online documentation (http://www.globalscape.com/).
- Disconnect or Exit.
- When uploading is complete, disconnect from UCS to leave
the application open or exit to close the application (frees
memory).
