- Assumptions.
- Basic knowledge of Macintosh computers operating with
MacOS, availability of Fetch, and intent to upload files
to the University's UCS system are assumed.
- Acquisition.
- Fetch is shareware. It is licensed free of charge to users
affiliated with educational or charitable organizations.
Other users may obtain an individual license. Visit the
Fetch page at Dartmouth College (http://www.dartmouth.edu/pages/softdev/fetch.html)
to learn more about licensing or to download the software.
- Installation.
- Exit all unnecessary applications and disable virus protection
prior to installation. Double click the executable file
downloaded from the Dartmouth College site and follow the
on-screen directions. When finished with installation, remember
to reactivate virus protection.
- Configuration.
- After launching Fetch, click the New Shortcut command
under Customize to create a shortcut to UCS. Name
should be an easily understood, short name for the site
(e.g., UCS). Host should be a domain name ranging
from d1.ucs.louisiana.edu through d116.ucs.louisiana.edu.
User ID should be UCS username. Password should
be UCS password. (Password is not required at this
step. If a password is supplied, it will be stored on the
computer and the shortcut can be used by all persons with
access to the computer.) Where CLID represents a UCS username,
Directory should be /home/CLID or /home/CLID/public_html
(for personal Web pages).
- Click the Preferences command under Customize
to establish default settings. Display server messages
should be checked (i.e., checkbox should have an
X). Under the General tab, select a default shortcut
(e.g., UCS). Under the Upload tab, set Default
text format and Default non-text format to Raw
Data. Add .txt suffix to text files should be
unchecked (i.e., checkbox cleared). Under the Misc
tab, Show sign-on dialog at startup should be checked
(i.e., checkbox should have an X). Quit Fetch after all
preferences are set.
- Utilization.
- After launching Fetch, supply password if needed, then
click on OK in the New Connection dialogue
box. After a connection is established and prior to initiating
uploads, click Set Upload Permissions command under
Remote. When a dialog box appears, use the following
settings to upload Web pages and other files that all UCS
users may see.
- Use the checkboxes to set Owner to Read,
Write, and Execute.
- Use the checkboxes to set Group to Read
and Execute.
- Use the checkboxes to set Everyone to Read
and Execute.
- In order to be effective, the upload permissions must
be set prior to file uploads. They remain in effect for
the duration of a connection unless a contradicting command
is issued. The upload permissions must be reset for each
unique connection.
- After setting upload permissions, click OK.
- Upload individual files with the Put button on
the screen or upload multiple files by clicking Put Folders
and Files under Remote.
- For additional usage instructions, access the Fetch help
files (with the application launched, go to the Menu
Bar, click Windows, then click Help) or
browse the online documentation (http://www.dartmouth.edu/pages/softdev/fetch.html).
- Disconnect or Quit.
- When uploading is complete, disconnect from UCS to leave
the application open or quit to close the application (frees
memory).
