-
- Assumptions.
- Basic knowledge of personal computers operating with Microsoft
Windows 95/98, availability of WS_FTP LE (version 5.08),
and intent to upload files to the University's UCS system
are assumed.
- Acquisition.
- WS_FTP LE is a commercial product from Ipswitch, Inc.
WS_FTP LE is a shareware version of WS_FTP that is made
available free to non-commercial users. Read the WS_FTP
LE license for information about free use of the LE version.
For advanced users, WS_FTP Pro (license fee required; educational
pricing available by phone but purchasing online is less
costly) has a richer feature set and is also available from
the same company. (The information below has not been tested
with WS_FTP Pro.) Visit the Ipswitch site (http://www.ipswitch.com/)
to view a price list or download the software.
- Installation.
- Exit all unnecessary applications and disable virus protection
prior to installation. Double-click the executable file
downloaded from the Ipswitch site and follow the on-screen
directions. When finished with installation, remember to
reactivate virus protection.
- Configuration.
- After launching WS_FTP LE, use the Session Properties
dialogue box to add a site profile. Session Properties
usually opens automatically when WS_FTP LE is launched.
If it does not open automatically, it can be accessed manually
by clicking Connect on the main WS_FTP LE interface.
- Four folder tabs appear slightly below the title bar of
the Session Properties dialogue box. Only two (General
and Startup) are discussed in this document.
- Click the General tab to establish the following
settings. Profile Name should be an easily understood,
short name for the site (e.g., UCS). Host Address
should be a domain name ranging from d1.ucs.louisiana.edu
through d116.ucs.louisiana.edu. Host Type
works best if set to Sun Solaris but will also function
if set to UNIX (standard). Where CLID represents
a UCS username, User ID should be set to CLID. The
remaining settings may be left blank.
- Click the Startup tab to establish more settings.
Where CLID represents a UCS username, Initial Remote
Site Folder should be /home/CLID or /home/CLID/public_html
(for personal Web pages). Initial Local Folder should
be the path to the files stored on the local (desktop) computer.
Time Offest is normally set to 0 (zero). Local
File Mask and Remote File Mask are usually left
blank. Initialize Command should be set to one of
the following settings.
- SITE UMASK 0022 is for uploading Web pages and
other files that all UCS users may see.
- SITE UMASK 0077 is for uploading files that no
other users can see.
- SITE UMASK 0027 is for uploading files that can
be seen by users in the same group or project.
- Utilization.
- With the Session Properties dialogue box open,
click General, click to select a Profile,
then click OK to connect to UCS. For detailed usage
instructions, access the WS_FTP LE help files (with the
application launched, go to the Menu Bar, click Help,
and click Contents) or browse Ipswitch's online documentation
(http://www.ipswitch.com/).
- Disconnect or Exit.
- When uploading is complete, click Close on the
main interface to disconnect from UCS and keep the application
open or or click Exit to close the application (frees
memory).
