The Help Desk provides assistance to UL Lafayette students, faculty, and staff who are using computers for academic pursuits.

The most widely recognized activity of the Help Desk is UCS account activation. The benefits of a UCS account are: (1) access to the Unix workstations in Stephens Memorial Hall and in the Conference Center (2) University email address and (3) dialup access to the University network from a home computer. To activate a UCS account, bring a picture ID (UL Lafayette ID, Louisiana driver's license, or passport) to the Help Desk (Stephens Memorial Hall, Room 201).

For the Unix workstations mentioned previously, the Help Desk provides self-help guides (available as printed handouts and as online documents), as well as one-on-one user instruction. The most popular self-help guides concern disk quota, writing papers in WordPerfect, printing, file manipulation, and building personal Web pages.

The Help Desk provides limited assistance for software applications in common use on personal computers (Windows and Mac). The most frequent questions concern tasks in word processor and spreadsheet applications, such as selecting other fonts, creating bullet lists, setting tab spacing, printing only part of a document, converting to or from another file format, and copying files to or from a floppy disk.

Other topics frequently addressed by the Help Desk include changing passwords, statistical analysis software, receiving e-mail, forwarding e-mail, and establishing e-mail aliases.

The Help Desk is open from 7:30 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Thursday and 7:30 AM to 12:30 PM on Fridays. Web-based support (http://helpdesk.louisiana.edu/), walk-in support (Stephens Memorial Hall, Room 201), telephone support (482-5516), and e-mail support (helpdesk@louisiana.edu) are provided by the Help Desk. If sending questions via e-mail, please include relevant information if known (e.g., operating system and version, application and version, CLID but not password).
