PC Repair 101

"Too err is human, but to really foul things up you need a computer."

PC's are great for automating tasks, keeping you informed, and even providing a degree of entertainment.  But when they don't work, it can cause a level of frustration and stress never before seen on the face of the planet.  

Relax, we have you covered.  Below are a few tips and tricks you can use to try to straighten things out.  If all else fails, call the experts, we're here 2HELP!

Generally Speaking

These tips can apply to just about anything on or plugged into the computer:

  • Check the Cable - More times than not computer problems are realted to cabling and connections.  Ensure all cables are connected firmly.  Disconnect and reconnect the cables you can, such as the power cable, ethernet cable, monitor cables, and USB cables.
  • Take Notes - Take notes of what you have done and all the error messages you see.  That message can help the tech more accurately diagnose the problem.

The Picture Does Not Appear

  • Check to make sure the signal cable is firmly connected in the socket.
  • Check to see if the computer system's power is ON.
  • Check that the Brightness Control is at the appropriate position, not at the minimum.

The screen is too bright or too dark

  • Check to make sure the signal cable is firmly connected
  • Check if the Brightness or contrast control is at the appropriate position, not at the maximum or minimum.

No sound is heard from speakers

  • Ensure the speaker signal cable is properly connected to the back of the computer (Most Dell computers have a green port to match the green end of the cable).
  • Check the volume control and power connection of the speakers, if they are amplified.
  • Check the Microsoft Volume Control or the Audio Mixer Program mute options and volume sliders.

Cannot connect to the Internet (or other network software like Outlook, Skype, or RCIM)

  • Ensure the network cable is plugged into both the computer and the wall jack
  • Take note if there is a red "X" any where in the bottom right of your screen on the toolbar.
