To identify whether Outlook Express is installed on your
computer, look for the icon labeled Outlook Express
on your desktop. If there is no icon on the desktop, click
Start, select Programs, and locate Outlook
Express in the menu. If Outlook Express does not appear
in these two places, you must use another program to send
and receive your mail.
Start Outlook Express by double clicking on the
desktop icon or on the menu selection.
Select Tools from the menu bar and choose Accounts.
Click the Mail tab.
Click Add and select Mail.
Enter your name in the Display Name: text entry
box and click Next.
Enter your email address in the Email Address:
text entry box and click Next.
Make sure that "My incoming mail server is a POP3
server." is selected.
Enter pop.louisiana.edu in the Incoming mail
server: text entry box.
Enter mailer.louisiana.edu in the Outgoing
mail (SMTP) server: text entry box. NOTE: Users
who want to send mail from an alternatve Internet provider
(not UL Lafayette) must enter the Outgoing mail
(SMTP) server name of their provider. Contact your Interet provider
for this information.
Enter your UCS CLID (username) in the Account name:
text entry box.
Enter your UCS password in the Password: text entry
box (optional).
Click Finish to save the settings and Close
to exit the Internet Accounts window.
NOTE: Email applications such as NetscapeMail, MicrosoftOutlook, MozillaThunderbird,
etc. have additional settings that will assist you in
automatically downloading new email to your PC. This
is referred to as
POP interval time. Always avoid setting POP Intervals
for less than 30 minutes. Automatically checking email
every
few minutes places a severe strain on the University's
mail server. Please avoid frequent POP intervals.
